Specialist appointments are stressful mostly because nobody tells you what is about to happen. So here is all of it, the sequence and the checklist, before you arrive.

01Your first visit

Nothing here will be a surprise.

This is exactly how a first consultation goes, so you can tell your child in advance, in their own words.

    Before you come

    Gather the immunisation card, every old prescription, all previous reports, and most valuable of all, any record of your child's height and weight over the years. School records count.

  2. 02

    Measurement

    Height on a wall-mounted stadiometer, weight, and where relevant sitting height, arm span and head circumference. Measured carefully, because millimetres matter over years.

  3. 03

    The conversation

    Pregnancy and birth, milestones, family heights, diet, sleep, school, and what worries you most. Children are spoken to, not just about.

  4. 04

    Examination & charting

    A gentle, explained examination, then plotting on the growth chart together on screen. You will see the same picture the doctor sees.

  5. 05

    The plan

    What we think is happening, which tests will answer the question, what each one involves, and when to return. Written down before you leave.

  6. 06

    Afterwards

    A summary you can share with your paediatrician. Reports can be sent ahead of the follow-up so the next visit starts where this one ended.

What to bring, and how to prepare
02What to bring

Four things that change the consultation.

The first four items on this list are worth more to me than any test I could order on the day. The last three are for your sake.

    Every height and weight you can findEssential

    Immunisation card, school health records, old prescriptions, a photo of pencil marks on a doorframe with dates. This is the single most valuable thing you can carry.

  • 02

    All previous reports, in date orderEssential

    Blood tests, scans, X-rays, either the originals or clear photographs of them. Old reports frequently prevent repeat tests.

  • 03

    Current medicines, in their boxesEssential

    Including inhalers, ointments, ayurvedic or homeopathic preparations and supplements. Bring the actual packs rather than a list.

  • 04

    Both parents' heightsEssential

    Measured if possible, not remembered. A child's genetic height target is calculated from them, and it changes the interpretation of everything else.

  • 05

    Birth details

    Birth weight, gestation at delivery, and any newborn admission or screening results.

  • 06

    Your questions, written down

    You will forget half of them otherwise. There is no such thing as a question too small for the list.

  • 07

    Something for your child to do

    A book or a device. Clinic days can be long, and a bored child is a restless one.

Kolkata every week, and seven towns every month.

Regular consultations run from the Department of Paediatric Endocrinology at Neotia Bhagirathi Woman and Child Care Centre in New Town. If travelling to the city is difficult, the monthly OPD clinics may be closer to you.

These clinics run once a month and the date moves. Always call the centre to confirm the next sitting before travelling.

04Preparing your child

Tell them the truth, in advance.

Children cope with unpleasant things far better than they cope with being surprised by them.

Say what will happen

“The doctor will measure how tall you are, listen to your chest, and talk to us.” Specific beats vague, every time.

Do not promise no needles

If a test is likely, say it is possible. A promise broken in a clinic is remembered for years.

Explain the measuring

Shoes off, heels together, standing tall against a wall. Practising once at home turns an odd request into a familiar game.

Let them ask me things

Children are welcome to ask their own questions and will be answered directly, not over their heads.

Avoid weight talk in the car

Especially with older children. Weight is discussed in the room, carefully, and never as a judgement.

Bring a second adult if you can

One to hold the conversation, one to hold the child. It makes a long appointment much easier for everyone.

05FAQ

Practical questions.

Where does Dr. Banerjee consult?
At Neotia Bhagirathi Woman and Child Care Centre in New Town, Kolkata, in the Department of Paediatric Endocrinology. Appointments can be booked through the hospital by phone or online.
Should my child be fasting?
Not for an ordinary first consultation. Fasting is only needed for specific tests, and you will be told in advance and in writing if it applies.
Will there be a blood test on the first day?
Usually not. The first visit is history, measurement and examination. Tests are chosen afterwards, based on what those reveal, and explained before they are ordered.
Do I need a referral?
No. Families can book directly. Bringing a summary from your paediatrician, along with previous reports and growth records, makes the consultation considerably more useful.
Do you provide a written summary?
Always. Every visit ends with a written note covering what we think is happening, what is being done, what to watch for, and when to return, in a form you can share with your paediatrician or school.
